HO SCALE: Iota (Extended)

This was done on a special request from the late Jack Shortliner who wanted to see what I could do on an "extended" Iota design. Iota was originally built in HO scale on a 17" x 56" board, and was meant to represent an end-of-the-line station on a short line railway. I lengthened the board another 16" and added an inch of width (Just because I am a bit OCD and the thought of using 17" would drive me nuts.). I stuck with a prairie branch line setting, but I didn't include a station. If you really want a station included, the team track could be moved to share the grain elevator track, and a station could be added in lieu of the team track spur. Overall, the design came together very nicely, and surprisingly still feels very uncluttered, at least to me.

This is an excellent track plan. I was looking for a small micro to build and this is just what I needed. I always liked your prairie branchline themes layout design, so keep up the great work and thanks for sharing.

Hi Guy, this one was always a favourite of mine as well ... so I am glad that you find some use for the track plan. Please send me some photos of the build ... I would like to feature them on my blog. Take care, Rob.

I've likewise been enthralled with this design since stumbling upon Richard Francaviglia's original RMC article from 1972. I am glad you kept the rural, high-plains, granger theme as it reminds me much of the erstwhile Milwaukee Road's various branchlines on the former Dakota Division. Two actual townsites come to mind immediately - Watson, Minnesota and Java, South Dakota - with the latter my personal favorite, but both an inspiration.
