HO SCALE: Sweeney Manufacturing Company, Ltd.

Along with posting my track plans to this blog, I am also going thru my old structure files and trying to upgrade them to my current standards. This morning I found an old file that contained some rough measurement for a brick building that would make a good 1950's era factory or manufacturing company.

The 2-story building measures 24-feet by 72-feet and has both a receiving dock for incoming railway shipments, and also a truck loading dock in the rear. To make the industry a little more interesting, I also added an additional loading dock with a deck crane for transferring even bigger shipments. After I finished designing the structure, I thought that I could have also added some sort a receiving area for coal just to diversify the car types the industry could handle.

I also wanted to place the structure in a diorama setting, so when I use it on a layout I would have all associated details readily available. I decided to just go with a simple tuning fork arrangement on an 18-inch by 6-foot shelf with a drop-down track added to the right end. Even in this simple form, this single industry layout would allow for some minimal switching and also offer a very realistic slice of a transition-era setting.
