N SCALE: Automotive Assembly Plant

I was asked to design an auto assembly plant in N-scale on two L-shaped hollow core doors. Since modeling the auto industry was something totally new to me, I really enjoyed the research needed to make this design work. At the time, I spent a few days researching the topic, and also received some help from the Micro/Small Model RR Layouts group. An article in Model Railroader by Jim Hediger ["Railroads and the automobile age, Part II" June 1997, page 92] was also of great assistance when designing this, and I would suggest that anyone wanting to build a similar themed layout consult Jim's article.

As for the layout, I wanted to depict a plant built after 1975 that still had a lot of product and material coming in by rail. I keep all the structures pretty much the same to highlight that this is a modern complex. I also think the clean look of the area is very important to the overall affect. You will also see that I left plenty of room for truck traffic as well. You will also notice that the layout needs extensions to operate properly. The owner plans to incorporate this in a bigger home layout and wanted exit points at each end. If the layout was operated on its own, it would need some sort of drop down track and each end of the mainline.

The track plan:
