On30 SCALE: Cat Mountain Line

These two 2'x4' On30 portable modules were done for a client's freelanced Cat Mountain Line. The narrow gauge railway runs from a small seaport out into the mountains to a mine in the pacific northwest sometime between 1930 and 1950.

My client wanted the layout to include a pier, single track car ferry, mine, simple engine facility/track, small warehouse or manufacturing business, team track, and a turntable. I was able to add most of this, but an O-scale car ferry was just too much for such a small space. However, the ferry could be added with another module added to the right end.

The layout owner plans to use 14 to 18-foot rolling stock which would be just right for the size of the layout. The shortest narrow gauge rolling stock that I had available was 30-foot long, and therefore a bit too long. I was able to find a small 25-ton shay that looks reasonable.

A crew could spent the day shuffling cars between the mine and the shipping wharf, and also taking freight and supplies up the line. The diesel oil would be pumped for the storage tanks on the wharf, to barrels on flat cars or in box cars. Timber should also come in via the wharf for the mine. General freight could be hauled to the station on the line.
