HO SCALE: Northside Industrial Park

I just finished this for a client who wanted a small generic industrial switching layout (ISL) with a 6-foot staging cassette attached to the right end. His list of Givens & Druthers included: enough operation to keep a switching crew busy for about 45 minutes in a modern, industrial setting with lots of chain link fencing; two medium sized modern industries either receiving or shipping covered hoppers and box cars; a dry bulk unloading spot; and a spot to service an engine with diesel delivery done by truck. It really wasn't expecting too much from the available space, so I was also able to add a small lumber dealer as well.

The resulting track plan actually has a bit of a back story to it since it was originally designed for a client back in April of 2019. At that time, the original client wanted an even smaller layout based on Chris Gilbert's "New Haston" design (Chris designed it to fit on a 12x72-inch board). I did up a rough draft in a slightly larger space (14x84 inches) and altered Chris' design a bit. But after sending the modified track plan back in to my client, I never heard from him again. I found that rough draft yesterday and decided it was a good starting point for this new design. However, it morphed even more from Chris' "New Haston" track plan and I am not even sure if it's heritage is even apparent any longer without this long-winded paragraph.

Nice compact layout. Track layout, for the most part, similar to the Burlington Junction Railway operation in Mt. Pleasant, IA. The industrial park has a connection with the east-west mainline of the BNSF (former CB&Q). Commodities and industries include: bulk liquid, dry bulk, oversize loads, plastics, and building supplies. Check Google.maps for how it's arranged.

Hi Dale,

I just had a look at the industrial park at Mt. Pleasant and I think that it would make an excellent small layout. I bookmarked it for future consideration. I am always looking for small, easy to model scenes like this so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Take care,
Rob.
