HO SCALE: Rearden Metal Products, Inc

Back in October of 2019, a new member of the Micro/Small Model RR Layouts Facebook group shared his first post outlining his plans to enhance his programming track module by including an electric arc furnace steel mill within the 24x72-inch space. I felt member could use the space much better than his concept drawing depicted, so I decided to mock up something that showed how I would use the space, and how I would simplify the track plan if I was building the layout.

What I ended up included a little less track, more room for scenic elements, and better operating potential, and still allowed the main to be isolated as the programming track. My design also lengthened the switch leads by a few inches, plus added a 2-track holding or interchange yard so the layout could be self contained. I also eliminate the run-around track and the double-slip turnout that the owner had planned to use.

As stated in the original premise for the layout, scrap metal is unloaded from gondolas on the scrap metal receiving track using a crane, then taken by truck to the unseen electric arc furnace. The scrap is rolled into steel coil in the rolling mill, then loaded into cars inside the shipping warehouse. There is also a scale track since all inbound and outbound cars must be weighed. The last track that can be switched is the additive track, which received incoming bulk chemicals used in the milling process.

Took me a second to get the Reardon Metal reference. Served by Taggart Transcontinental I presume.

Hi Ed ... nope ... just a name that popped into my head when I was designing the layout ... I am not sure what inspired it ... probably something I read that day.
