HO SCALE: Canadian Pacific Branch Line

Many of my small layout designs focus on branch line operations that make it easier to portray in a small room. I also tend to make them as generic as possible so they are easily adapted to a variety of prototypes, and this design is a good example of that approach.

This is an HO-scale design for a small end of a branch line operation that would easily fit in a bedroom size room, and still leave the centre of the room open. The design is in keeping with smaller and manageable layouts that focus on more prototypical operations. Although I depict a Canadian Pacific branch line, the line is very generic and could be located almost anywhere.

The era shown is the 1970s with mostly second generation diesels, and RDCs providing limited passenger service. Normal freight service would probably consist of two short trains per day, and should keep an operating crew busy for a few hours. The amount of switching duties in the modeled towns could easily dictate the necessity for a dedicated switch engine stationed somewhere in Hedgehill, with refueling done by truck.

The original design done back in 2017 had a bit more track and a few more industries, but I culled some of the track and added more scenery features in this version. Even if you don't have room for the entire layout, the design could be reduced to an L-shape space and include just the town of Dellcliff and the staging yard. The mainline line would end just north of the truss bridge, but would be just enough to provide a tail track for switching between staging and the remaining online industries.

Wow Rob this is an excellent small room design! This will easily fit in my spare bedroom and I can even increase the size a tad more since my space is 12.5x11 feet. I have been looking for a good design I liked and this is just what I wanted. Many thanks!

Thanks Simon ... I'm glad you like this design and found some use for it ... I really liked it as well and it is generic enough that it would fit many prototypes and locations. Good luck with your project.
